TROPICAL FRUIT NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

MEXICO: Exporters fear US will close its borders to mangoes from Oaxaca after the suspension of aerial spraying     INDIA: Seven years of research leads to new banana variety

The Rural Development Secretariat of the National Agricultural Health, Safety, and Quality Service (Senasica) has ordered suspending the aerial fumigation to combat pests in Oaxaca’s mango productions to avoid harming other species.     After seven years of extensive research, the Banana Research Centre (BRC) in Jalgaon — which functions under the Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth (MPKV) — has come up with a new kind of banana variety, which has been named ‘Phule Pride.’

COLOMBIA: Hass avocados reach record exports in 2020     CHINA: Taiwan pineapple banned over biosafety issue

From humble origins on a 1.5-acre plot to flowering into a multi-million dollar industry for cultivators, Colombia recently over-took leading avocado producing nations as the main supplier of Hass to Europe, dominating 30% of the total market share.     Chinese mainland’s latest import ban on pineapples from Taiwan will hit the island’s pineapple industry hard, which highly depends on the mainland market, said industry insiders from both sides of the Taiwan Straits reached by the Global Times on Friday.

ECUADOR: Santa Elena sees rise in organic banana acreage     MALAYSIA: Durian trade battered as lockdown bites

Ecuador’s most westerly point, the Santa Elena peninsula, is fast becoming a hub for the country’s organic banana production thanks to the favorable climate and an abundance of virgin land.     A long lockdown has slowed domestic demand for durians and left traders more reliant on China’s appetite for the world’s smelliest fruit.

PHILIPPINES: Banana exports down 18.3% on weak production     VIETNAM: Over 14,000 tonnes of dragon fruit exported to China via Lao Cai border gates

Philippine banana exports last year declined by almost a fifth to a two-year low of 3.595 million metric tons (MMT) as shipments across all key markets contracted due to weak domestic production.     More than 14,000 tonnes of dragon fruit were exported to China from February 10-17 (the seven-day Lunar New Year holiday) through border gates in the northern province of Lao Cai.

IRAN: Tropical fruit imports reach USD500 million annually     INDIA: Switch to jumbo guavas helps Gujarat farmer earn 10 times more

The agriculture ministry is planning to grow tropical fruits Sistan-Baluchestan to curb the high import cost of tropical fruits.     Supplemented with organic farming and adopting scientific techniques has helped Magan Kamariya grow around 1.5 kilos worth of guava, and earned him around Rs 20 lakh (USD 27,600) a year so far.

PHILIPPINES: Mangosteen to become a fruit for all seasons     CHINA: 2020 fruit imports surpass USD10 billion for first time

A breakthrough farming technology enabling mangosteen to be an all-season fruit will soon be rolled-out in Davao Region.     China’s customs statistics indicate that the value of fruit imports exceeded USD10 billion for the first time in 2020, reaching a total value of USD10.26 billion — an 8% increase over the previous year.

THAILAND: China sign deal promoting Thai fruit export     USA: Researchers find possible answer to citrus greening

With seasonal fruit about to hit the market, including durian, rambutan, and mangosteen, the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce has singed an agreement with CCIC Thailand to provide better traceability service for Thai fruit exported to China     UC Riverside isolated the individual peptide responsible for giving finger lime its resistance to citrus greening, which can be injected into the tree with promising results.

SAUDI ARABIA: Ban on planting palm trees on roads and parks to curb spread of red palm weevil     CAMBODIA: Kampong Cham mango farmers in limbo as price plummets

Saudi Arabian authorities have imposed a permanent ban on planting of palm trees along roads as well as in parks and gardens  to prevent the spread of the red palm weevil.     Three years ago, a 58-year-old farmer in Kampong Cham province made a blunderous decision to cut down all his banana trees to make way for mango farming which was getting more expensive than bananas.

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO: An exotic experience from fruits grown in their backyard     UGANDA: Pineapple vendors in Kampala in brisk business

On their one-acre property, the Ram family grows fruits like rambutan, rollinia, mamey sapote, kumquats and grapes, the plants of which they sell.     The Independent chronicles the daily lives of pineapple vendors in Kyebando, Uganda
