The Gardening Society organized the 20th Mango Festival at Coral Hotel in Khartoum on the 2nd week of June, under the comprehensive auspices of the Khartoum legislative council. The festival provided a forum for mango stakeholders such as farmers, producers, exporters, manufacturers, the experienced, and researchers, as well as provided an opportunity for farmers to proffer their products and to know the producing companies.  The festival displayed several mango varieties praised by all the attendees.

Abdel-Rahman M. Abdel-Majid, Director of the Sudanese Center for Sterilization of Exports, announced that Sudan will begin to export 100 tons of mangoes this month. Abdel-Majid said that the permission was issued after the improvement of fruit quality through production technologies implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture. He added that the Center will provide a seal of quality to mango fruits that are good for export.

Engr. Abdel-Rahman Misaik, advisor of the head of gardening society, said that Sudan could reach an international level in producing mangoes, thanks to its suitable climate and environment that provides unique qualities to Sudanese mango. Misaik called on the Sudanese government to adopt the agricultural and developmental projects that can support the country’s economy, noting the increase in international demand for Sudanese it in the recent period.

Abdel-Azim Sanusi, a farmer and owner of Bit Badi” and “Sanusia” varieties, said that one mango tree produces more than 45 cartons during peak season. However, he needs support to combat fruit flies that is a serious threat in mango production in River Nile State.

 

Reportedly, several regions of the Sudan are characterized by the production of mango and mango products of Shendi in River Nile State, Abu- Jibaiha in North Kordofan State, many areas in Sinnar, Blue Nile, South Darfur, and East Darfur States. The famous varieties of mangos are “Galbattor” and “Alhindia”.
