TROPICAL FRUIT NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

FAO: Transparent and open food commodity markets are vital for food security and nutrition     CHINA: Companies Set Sights on Laos for Durian Production

Open and transparent food commodity markets and efficient supply chains are paramount to ensure that everyone has access to adequate, safe and nutritious food during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, according to FAO.     According to Laotian domestic media, Chinese companies are seeking to lease 3,200–4,800 hectares of land around Vientiane, the country’s capital, to establish durian plantations, with the ultimate goal of exporting the fruit back to China once official export approval has been obtained.

INDIA: Banana, tapioca farmers stare at steep price fall     AUSTRALIA: South Australia prepares to welcome 1,200 South Pacific fruit pickers

Banana and tapioca farmers across the district are facing a steep fall in prices owing to a dip in demand, though banana farmers are looking forward to a slight improvement in the situation after March, ahead of the Onam season.     About 1,200 South Pacific fruit pickers are expected to arrive in South Australia to help fill critical shortages of seasonal agriculture workers.

CAMBODIA: Exporters seek expedited mango exports to China amid price slump     THAILAND: Mango growers complain of low prices and fewer exports

In an effort to stabilize the market and prices, Cambodia’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is encouraging fruit farmers to register their orchards to qualify for export.     Mango orchard owners in Thailand’s northern province of Phitsanuloke are seeking help from the provincial administration to promote the sale of their sweet fruit, particularly Barracuda Mango variety.

FIJI: New papaya and pineapple products launched     INDIA: Andhra is going bananas — how India’s largest producer of the fruit is breaking own record

With increased papaya and pineapple production, the agriculture sector in Fiji is now packaging them as dried fruits for the international market.     Andhra Pradesh is going bananas with its banana production and is surpassing its own records, thanks to a series of initiatives both by the government and private sector in the last three years.

JAPAN: Excess fungicides found in exported bananas     INDIA: Pineapple farmers upbeat as demand soars in north India

Just as Taiwan is intensifying its exports of pineapples to Japan following a ban by China, the Japanese ordered the removal of 750 boxes of Taiwanese bananas due to excessive levels of fungicides.     Pineapple farmers across the State are possibly looking at around 20% rise in fruit production, even as demand has gone up in north India following the winter season and COVID-19 restrictions.

USA: High-tech detection determines pineapple harvest needs     JAPAN: Pineapples qualify for the Tokyo Olympics

Researchers are investigating whether remote sensing and computer vision can help pineapple growers carry out regular inspection of the field and automated counting of flower intensity.     Pineapples, along with mangoes, dragon fruit, and bananas, have met the requirements to be served at the Tokyo Olympics.

INDIA: Mango production likely to jump 4.24% in 2020-21     AUSTRALIA: How to choose, store and eat Hass and Shepard avocados

The agriculture ministry said the mango production in the country is estimated to increase by 4.24% to 21.12 million tonnes in the crop year 2020-21 ending June.     The author talks to experts about how to select the best avocado on the shelf and what to do with them when you bring them home.

MEXICO: Pineapple production increased by 16% in 2020     VIETNAM: Lục Ngạn lychee granted GI certificate in Japan

Mexico produced 1,209,000 tons of pineapples in 2020, 16.2% more than in the previous year, positioning the country as the world’s ninth biggest producer of this fruit.     The Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) has granted a Geographical Indication (GI) certificate to lychees grown in Lục Ngạn District.

AUSTRALIA: Banana growers call for urgent Government assistance     MALAYSIA: Penang’s durian season will arrive late this year but harvest expected to be high quality

Australian banana growers who have lost up to 100 per cent of their crop to cyclonic winds are calling for urgent assistance from the Queensland and Federal Governments.     Tan Chee Keat, who owns orchards in Balik Pulau, Teluk Bahang and Teluk Kumbar, predicted that the durian season would run from May to August.
