TROPICAL FRUIT NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

In a paper published in an MPDI Journal of Fungus, scientists explored disease-biocontrol agents of five Bacillus strains that display antibiotic ability against TR4 in China, one of the largest banana growers in the world.     Story books for school children in Chhota Udepur will soon be published on eco-friendly hand-made paper made from banana stems grown in this tribal area.

In a paper published in an MPDI Journal of Fungus, scientists explored disease-biocontrol agents of five Bacillus strains that display antibiotic ability against TR4 in China, one of the largest banana growers in the world.     Despite record exports from Ecuador, which remains the world’s largest banana supplier, prices in the largest import markets are rising due to strong demand and local COVID-related imbalances in supply chains

The Fairtrade Base Wage for banana plantations comes into effect on July 2021, meaning wage increases of up to 15 percent for banana workers and a significant step towards creating a living wage for thousands of banana plantation workers worldwide.     Farming communities in Uttara Kannada and Dakshina Kannada in Karnataka are demonstrating that much more than banana bread — the flavor of the first year of lockdown — can be made with the fruit.

The Neder Banaan greenhouse in the Netherlands now boasts fully-fledged banana bunches. In June, the first flower appeared and the first Neder Banaan was ‘born’.     The Philippines is not just losing market share in key banana markets to Latin American producers but investments as well, which could threaten the domestic output of the world’s second top producer of the prized yellow fruit, an industry group said.

As New Zealand went into lockdown after a COVID positive case was detected, it wasn’t toilet paper that shoppers were rushing for in the shopping aisles - it was bananas.     Conditions in Chinese banana production areas have not been great in the last few weeks, with production volume growing as more and more bananas ripen, but the product quality is uneven.

California’s avocado harvest is drawing to a close, and prices for Mexican avocado imports, which represent the bulk of supply in the US, are skyrocketing.     Ethiopia has huge potential in avocados, says Evert Wulfrank of Durabilis, but growers need to be responsible about where and how they produce.

Kenya’s Kakuzi is going the extra mile to change the narrative around avocados and water consumption, using rainwater to irrigate its orchards.
Peru has emerged to dominate the summer avocado market in Korea with consistent supply and competitive prices.

This year’s mango diplomacy kicked off in July when Pakistani Ambassador to the United States Asad Majeed Khan hosted a select group of American lawmakers, officials, media persons, and scholars for dinner.     At the first China mango industry conference, the Tianyang district signed an agreement with Guangzhou Pilot Food Investment Co., Ltd. to develop its fruit sector.

Coconut was what Malaysians ate the most in terms of weight in 2020 out of 14 fruits included in an official study, with the second being durians.     The Geographical Identity (GI) tagging efforts by the government of Maharashtra and Indian mango farmers’ collective will tag over 400 million mangoes of more than 1,000 farmers in the Konkan belt by 2022.

The Ord Irrigation Scheme, a plan designed to develop Australia's tropical north for intensive irrigated agriculture by harnessing the waters of the Ord River, is set to bring Western Australia’s largest mango orchard back to life.     For the first time, Pakistan Customs has processed a consignment of export of fresh mangoes (White Chaunsa) from Pakistan to Russia under the Convention on Transports Internationaux Routiers (TIR), or International Road Transports.

The world’s largest producer of fruit and vegetable has partnered with a vegan textile startup to upcycle its fruit waste into vegan leather.     DOST-PCAARRD officially kicked off the implementation of tan R&D Program to further boost the production of the country’s “sweetest” pineapple variety.

Pineapple-based agroforestry, traditionally practiced by ethnic Hmar tribe in southern Assam, can be a sustainable alternative to jhum cultivation in northeast India.     In 2019 Ghana exported USD10 million of pineapples to the worldwide market as global demand for the fruit was increasing.

Farmers are enjoying tremendous success cultivating papaya in fallow lands in Sreemangal upazila of Moulvibazar district, thanks to bumper yield and a reasonable market price.     A market in China’s Ganzhou city has reportedly found Covid-19 on the surface of durian packages imported from Thailand, the Office of Agricultural Affairs under the Thai Embassy in Beijing reported.

The recently released OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook, which covers the present to 2030, gives particular attention to bananas and the four other major tropical fruits: mango, pineapple, avocado, and papaya.     A farmer from Taiwan established a dragon fruit plantation in Gansu, China

Since July of this year, prices of Thai mangosteens on the Chinese market have been trending downward, falling by as much as 50% in some cases. This drop in prices has been fueled primarily by a stagnant domestic fruit market in Thailand triggered by a recent rise in COVID-19 cases.     As the Covid-19 pandemic hit hard, lower volumes exported as reliance on China continues to bite amid prolonged pandemic; Vietnam's dragon fruit exports are currently facing difficulties; therefore, the country must find other potential alternative markets.
