TFNet kickstarts international webinar series on minor tropical fruits with “jackfruit”

The international webinar on ‘Developing the jackfruit for global consumption and markets’ was held on 21 July 2022 and organized by the International Tropical Fruits Network (TFNet) with support from the Malaysian Department of Agriculture (DOA).

  AUSTRALIA: New rules to stop spread of potentially devastating banana fungus     INDIA: Banana export increases by 703%, a jump of 8-fold in 9 yrs  
               
  Banana freckle disease has re-emerged in the Northern Territory, sparking fears the outbreak could threaten the banana industry.     India's banana export jumped from Rs 26 crore (USD 3.25 million) in April-May 2013 to Rs 213 crore (USD 478.4 million) in April-May 2022.  
               
  PHILIPPINES: Banana stalk, ideal material for composite boards used as insulation     PHILIPPINES: Climate change makes banana, seaweed farming hard for women in Palawan  
               
  A study from DOST-FPRDI turned fibers from saba banana stalks into thermal insulation boards.     Small-scale banana farmers in Aborlan town in southern Palawan are also experiencing changes in weather conditions that affect their produce.

  CHINA: Hong Kong dumps hundreds of Taiwan’s mangos on improbable Covid-19 risk     PAKISTAN: Prized mango harvest hit by water scarcity  
               
  440 pounds of mangoes imported from Taiwan tossed out after finding traces of coronavirus on the skin of just one of the orange-hued fruits.     Mango farmers in Pakistan say production of the prized fruit has fallen by up to 40 percent in some areas because of high temperatures and water shortages.  
               
  AUSTRALIA: Manbulloo to manage new mango varieties     PHILIPPINES: Queen pineapple, pili nut gets innovation boost from DOST  
               
  The Queensland Government has awarded Manbulloo the commercial rights to the three new mango varieties, NMBP-1201, NMBP-1243 and NMBP-4069.     Bicol’s queen pineapple as well as the pili nut received support from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through the Science for Change Program (S4CP).  
               
  TURKEY: Tropical fruit exports rise 85 percent     INDIA: KAU to study infection in pineapple plants  
               
  Türkiye’s tropical fruit exports exhibited an 85 percent increase last year from 2020 to amount to USD13 million, according to a trade group.     The Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) has launched a study into what appears to be a viral infection in pineapple plants in the Palakuzha area near Vazhakulam.  
               
  GHANA: 6% decline in pineapple exports in 2021; ranked 11th globally     INDIA: New fungal disease detected in jackfruit in Kerala  
               
 

Ghana’s Pineapple exports to the world registered a decline of 6% in value in 2021 compared to earnings in 2020.

   

Athelia rolfsii, a soil-borne fungal pathogen, is a major threat to several crops and was found in jackfruit samples collected from three districts.

 
               
  AUSTRALIA: Avocado oversupply has farmers begging consumers to eat more to reduce waste     MEXICO: Mission Produce grapples with avocado shortfalls following meager harvest  
               
  A new report by agribusiness bank Rabobank said Australian growers would this year produce 22 avocados per Australian, up 26 per cent on last year’s figures.     Mexico did not specify why harvests were lower this year, though the USDA predicted in June 2021 that drought conditions in Mexico could hamper production in upcoming crop cycles.  
               
  INDIA: Center to promote dragon fruit cultivation in 50,000 hectares     PHILIPPINES: Pests threaten dragon fruit farms in Ilocos Norte  
               
  Following the footsteps of the Gujarat and Haryana Governments, the Center has decided to promote the cultivation of dragon fruit for its health benefits.     Several dragon fruit growers in Ilocos Norte on Friday expressed concern about a growing anthracnose and canker infestations in their plantations this harvest season.  
               
  THAILAND: Mangosteen trees making way for pricier durians, says official     VIETNAM: Passion fruit cleared for export to China  
               
  Farmers in Thailand are felling mangosteen trees to plant more durians, which fetch higher prices in the market.     The General Administration of Customs of China issued a document agreeing to import passion fruit from Vietnam starting July 1.
