  UK: Banana prices on the increase     MALAYSIA: Researchers develop plastic containers made from tapioca and banana leaves  
               
  Shortages are not the only problem facing shoppers when buying fruit & veg: prices are also on the up with bananas 11% more expensive.     A team of researchers from Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka’s (UTeM) have developed an innovative plastic container made from tapioca and banana leaves.  
               
  PHILIPPINES: Banana sector badly needs government support     Increase in Banana and Plantain Production  
               
  FAO estimated that Guatemala exported a total of 2.467 million metric tons of bananas last year, eclipsing the Philippines     Jamaica's banana and plantain industry enjoyed a very productive 2022, recording a 2.8% increase in banana production and 18.7% for plantain.  
               
  CAMBODIA: Demand for mango up but production stumbles     MEXICO: Mango industry continues to take quantum leaps in the right direction despite challenges  
               
  Fresh mango exporters say demand for mangoes from overseas markets, especially China, is beginning to recover however mango production has declined in early 2023.     Mexico dominates the mango market, last year it produced 65 million pounds of mangos for the US Market an increase of 12% over the previous year.  
               
  US: As mango demand grows, growers increase volumes     INDIA: Mango exports looking fruitful as transport costs start to fall  
               
  Both the supply and consumption of mango in the U.S. have experienced a steady increase in the last few years, prompting exporters from Central and South America to increase their production volumes.     As Indian mango growers rejoice at the prospect of increased export demand, supply chain stakeholders are looking to maximise the potential for growth.  
               
  VIETNAM: Can pineapple skins replace soap?     MALAYSIA: Generating RM200,000 from sale of pineapples  
               
  Fuwa Biotech ferments pineapple waste to make natural soap, detergent, toilet cleaner, and more.     Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Kelantan branch aims to generate up to RM200,000 in revenue this year from the sale of MD2 pineapples  
               
  INDIA: Guava cultivation up, may replace papaya in Himachal’s lower reaches     AUSTRALIA: Hass avocado growers to access Indian market in ‘game-changer’ deal  
               
  The high-density variety of guava developed by the College of Forestry and Horticulture, Neri has started replacing papaya in the lower reaches of the state.     The national peak avocado body has welcomed a “game changer” deal giving Australian Hass growers access to the Indian market.  
               
  USA: California avocado growers expecting a slightly smaller yield, with larger fruit size     KENYA: Eyes on Malaysia’s avocado market  
               
  Although the industry faces serious challenges such as drought and water restrictions, California’s avocado growers are reporting good quality fruit.     Kenya is looking for avocado markets in Malaysia as it finalizes import requirements in the Asian country.  
               
  Jackfruit prices increase 7 times as foreign demand rises     VIETNAM: Chinese growers put Vietnamese durian, dragon fruit in risky oversupply  
               
  Jackfruit prices have increased 6-7 times over the same period last year as traders step up their purchases of the fruit for export, mainly to China.     Vietnamese dragon fruit is at risk of oversupply, while durian prices will likely plummet as China, the local fruits’ largest importer, continues growing an increasing amount of the two trees.  
               
  CHINA: Hainan gears up for first harvest of Southeast Asia’s ‘king of fruits’     INDIA: Heat may scorch fruit, vegetable output by 30%  
               
  China is gearing up for the harvest of its first domestic durian crop this summer after more than four years of cultivation, although it is not expected to challenge Southeast Asia’s stranglehold on sales.     Production of fruits and vegetables in the country may fall up to 30% this season as farmers report damages to their crop due to high temperatures amid the ongoing flowering and fruiting process.
