TROPICAL FRUIT NEWS

AUSTRALIA: First genetically modified fruit sent for approval     VENEZUELA: Banana fungus may worsen hunger crisis

Scientists have submitted Australia’s first genetically modified fruit – a Cavendish banana – to regulators for approval, saying it has been engineered to withstand a deadly fungus that poses a threat to banana growers worldwide.     A resistant fungus which wilts banana and plantain plants and infects soil could worsen the food crisis in Venezuela, where 6.5 million people already suffer hunger, growers groups and a United Nations agency say.

UGANDA: New banana economy: upcycling banana waste to rugs, wigs, packaging and more     INDIA: Untimely rain, windstorm damage banana plantations in Burhanpur

Ugandan start-ups are leading the charge in upcycling banana waste into innovative products, transforming the nation’s circular economy.     Sudden rainfall accompanied by strong winds and lightning has again damaged standing banana crops in Burhanpur district.

JAPAN: The secret to US$230 winter mangoes – farmer tricks the fruit     USA: Strong volumes of mango arriving

Farmer Hiroyuki Nakagawa has been growing mangoes in the snowy Tokachi region of Japan’s northernmost island, which sells for as much as US$230 each.     The mango industry is enjoying excellent momentum, with record volumes of high-quality fruit arriving in the U.S. this year.

AUSTRALIA: At an average of $6 each, soaring pineapple prices are here to stay     KENYA: First pineapple consignment to Israel to be shipped in June

A lack of supply has pushed prices to record highs with the fruit being sold for as much as $14 each and an average of $6 at most supermarkets.     Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi told MPs that Kenya had inked a deal with the Jewish State that will see all Kenyan goods that are admissible in the European Union access the Israel market.

SAUDI ARABIA: Annual papaya production exceeds 4k tons amid self-sufficiency efforts     BANGLADESH: Green papaya prices have soared, no longer a “cheap” food option

Saudi Arabia is on course to becoming self-sufficient in papaya, with the production of the tropical fruit increasing to 4,717 tons annually, as the Kingdom pushes to raise the rate of cultivation as part of achieving food security under Vision 2030.     Green papaya, once a cheap vegetable, has now turned so expensive, making it difficult for the poor to source this nutrition-rich item.

NEW ZEALAND: Wind and cold spells avocado shortage, but oversupply and low prices possible later this year     KENYA: Hass avocado industry eyes U.S. admission

Cyclone Gabrielle and cold snaps in spring last year mean avocados are scarce on supermarket shelves, a grower and supermarket supplier say.     The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the USDA has drafted a pest risk assessment for the importation of fresh Kenyan Hass avocado into the U.S.

VIETNAM: Dragon fruit exports continue to fall amid intense competition     INDIA: Karnataka farmers pin hopes on Malaysian red jackfruit variety Dang Surya

According to the General Department of Customs, Vietnam’s dragonfruit exports have been plummeting since 2019 because of intense international competition.     The cultivation of Dang Surya, a red jackfruit variety of Malaysian origin, in Karnataka’s coastal region appears to be promising, going by the yield in the orchards of two farmers.

CHINA: Scientists find passion fruit can kill fruit fly eggs     BRAZIL: Four companies are dedicated to cultivation and export of red guavas

Chinese scientists have recently discovered that passion fruit can directly kill the eggs of fruit flies, providing a new method to control the pest, according to a Science and Technology Daily report.     In Brazil, red guava is a widely cultivated and appreciated fruit, and its export potential has been explored by several producers.

VIETNAM: Local Musang King durian prices plunge by half     THAILAND: Green light for pomelo to US

Loan in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 8 is selling a kilogram of Musang King durian flesh at VND650,000 ($27.68), down by half from early March.     The United States will start to import Thai pomelos next month from Thailand after years of negotiations, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives.
