TROPICAL FRUIT NEWS

MALAYSIA: PLS Plantations & Agrofresh to develop largest banana plantation in the country     INDIA: Farmers incur huge losses as rains damage banana crop

With the initial 500 acres of planting, this partnership aims to scale up to 2,500 acres of banana plantations in the subsequent phases over three years.     Unseasonal and untimely rains that lashed Mahanandi mandal in Nandyal district on June 7 and 8 caused severe damage to banana crops.

ECUADOR: Banana industry could lose 128,000 acres due to El Niño     CAMBODIA: Banana chips connect hearts, support community

Ecuador’s Association of Banana Growers of El Oro has warned about the possible loss of up to 125,000 productive acres due to the imminent impact of the El Niño weather phenomenon.     Non Channy has launched an agro-processing venture in the Samlot district of Battambang province, where there is an over abundance of unwanted bananas.

BANGLADESH: “Capital of Mangoes” uses Chinese methods to produce organic fruit     INDIA: Rain, pests drain mangoes of colour, flavour

Chapainawabganj is famous in recent years for producing high-quality, chemical-free mangoes by using Chinese methods.     It’s peak mango season in north India, but varieties of the fruit arriving in the market lack taste, odour and colour.

PERU: Piura mango exports hindered by lack of flowering     PHILIPPINES: Fresh mangoes to begin shipping to Australia

One of Peru’s main producing regions, Piura, is facing complications, with mango crops showing no sign of flowering as of the end of June.     Beginning this June, the Philippines will ship fresh mangoes to Australia where residents have grown to enjoy the fruit in the past couple of years.

MALAYSIA: New pineapple variety expected to increase production     INDONESIA: Pineapple exports to China growing fast

The Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (MPIB) will introduce a new variety of the tropical plant in August that would push up Malaysia’s yearly production.     With sufficient tropical sunshine and high temperatures throughout the year, about 200,000 sweet pineapples are harvested every day at the plantation of PT Great Giant Pineapple.

KENYA: New study reveals willingness of papaya farmers to reduce pesticide use     MEXICO: The US is buying up nearly all avocado exports

A new study published in the CABI Agriculture and Bioscience journal has revealed a willingness of smallholder papaya farmers in Kenya to reduce their chemical pesticide use to fight the papaya mealybug.     Avocados are popular because they’re delicious, but also because they’re healthy—they contain unsaturated fats and fiber that help reduce cholesterol.

PERU: Smaller fruit drops avocado projection     INDIA: About 200 plant variants of jackfruit are fruiting in IIHR

In January, the Association of Hass Avocado Producers of Peru (ProHass) announced a 12.5% increase in exported volume year-on-year, reaching 29,023 containers (624,000 tons).     Director of the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), Bengaluru, Sanjay Kumar Singh said on Saturday that of about 400 plant varieties of jackfruit maintained by the IIHR, about 200 are fruiting.

VIETNAM: Red-fleshed jackfruit price halves     CHINA: Monthly durian imports hit record high

The prices of locally grown red-fleshed jackfruit have tumbled by half from a year ago to VND50,000 (US$2.11) for a kilogram.     Durians have this year achieved unprecedented popularity on the Chinese market, especially during the peak export season for Thai durians.

VIETNAM: Fruit and vegetable exports hit record high in six months     CHINA: First durian sales just days away after month-long delay due to weather

Exports of fruit and vegetables in Vietnam hit a record high of US$2.7 billion in the first six months of 2023, mainly thanks to the high demand from China.     China’s home-grown durians are poised to hit the market in a matter of days, but their limited yields and high prices are not expected to challenge the market share of Southeast Asian producers.
