TROPICAL FRUIT NEWS

INDIA: This festive season, the banana is not so humble as prices skyrocket     ECUADOR: Climate change tests banana industry

Just when the prices of tomatoes started to come down in markets, the price of the humble banana has now skyrocketed.     Ecuador is one of the top banana exporters in the world, but the changing climate is pushing up costs and threatening both fruit quality and yield.

PHILIPPINES: Major effort ongoing to contain Panama disease in banana crop     NEW ZEALAND: Far North ripe for financial and environmental benefits of bananas

The Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) said that it is ramping up its efforts to contain Fusarium wilt, also known as Panama disease, in the banana industry.     Bananas are the world’s most popular fruit and the Far North could become a major banana-growing region, bringing big advantages for farmers.

AUSTRALIA: Biggest banana grower up for sale for $180m     COLOMBIA: Banana union celebrates historic deal on worker’s rights

The farms and operating business of Australia’s biggest banana grower, Mackays, have been put on the market and could fetch as much as $180 million.     Banana producers have reached a historic agreement with the country’s biggest agricultural union that stands to benefit 22,000 workers from 251 banana farms.

AUSTRALIA: Proposed ban of fruit fly pesticide dimethoate concerns growers     PHILIPPINES: Banana growers shift to grain production due to Fusarium Wilt

Shipments of mangoes to Western Australia from the Northern Territory and Queensland could be halted as a result of a proposal to ban the use of a significant pesticide.     Small banana growers have switched to grains production after the pestering Panama Disease kept spreading in sprawling banana farms of Davao del Norte in Mindanao.

SOUTH KOREA: Industry eyes more tropical fruits due to climate change     PAKISTAN: Mango exporters turn to advanced freezing tech

Seasonal fruits in South Korea could become vastly different in the following decades, as warmer temperatures will gradually reduce cultivable areas for traditonal fruit crops in the country.     In a bid to boost their market share in China, Pakistani mango exporters have unveiled plans to leverage innovative mango processing and treatment technologies.

INDIA: Pineapples from Meghalaya are exported to Abu Dhabi     PHILIPPINES: Pineapple exports rebounded last year

Pineapples from the Meghalaya have been gaining popularity and are being marketed through the eminent Lulu Group into the prestigious Gulf markets.     The Philippines’ pineapple exports increased by 5.6 percent to some 580,000 metric tons (MT) in 2022,  in contrast to the downturn in global shipments.

SOUTH AFRICA: Westfalia Fruit applauds South African avocado exports admission to China     BRAZIL: Avocado production on the increase

Days after admission of South African avocados into the Chinese market was confirmed by authorities, Westfalia Fruit is joining in celebrating the milestone. The company manages half of all South African avocado exports.     IBGE, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, estimates that avocado production in Brazil has grown by around 38.59% between 2017 and 2021, reaching today 18.1 thousand hectares.

THAILAND: JD enhances durian supply     SINGAPORE: Tropical fruits from India find their place in markets

JD.com and the southern Thai province of Chumphon have announced new centralised durian harvesting collaboration, the first of its kind between a Chinese company and Thailand.     From juicy jackfruits to Kaji Lemons, plums, and starfruits, the fruits organically grown in the state of Assam are gradually making their way to markets in Singapore.
