A national fruit fly strategy will be developed to reduce the impact of the pest on Australia’s fruit growing regions.
Growers and industry representatives from across the country met this week to discuss new ways to tackle fruit fly.
The Citrus Australia South Australia Regional Committee says the idea of a national fruit fly taskforce generated plenty of interest from those attending.
Chairman Con Poulos says it will now look at establishing the group.
“The next step is the steering committee, which is our group, and we’ll start bringing other people in now to have a look at what the structure might look like, what the national objectives would be and back to liaising with industry, because this has to be an industry-led group if this is going to go forward.”
Mr Poulos says there is plenty of scope for a national approach to complement the strategies in place in each state.
