Taipei, Oct. 27 (CNA) Taiwan has provided its papaya seedling technology to Mexico, as part of the government’s efforts to expand international agricultural exchanges and cooperation, according to an official at a local agricultural research station.

“The technology transfer to Especialistas en Papayas S.A. de C.V. marked a new page in international cooperation for Taiwan,” Huang Tze-chung, director of Taiwan’s Kaohsiung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station, said recently.

The cooperation not only has no negative impact on Taiwan’s agriculture, but helps the island to gain a better hold in international development trends in the fruit industry, he added.

Such experience can help Taiwan select different seedlings for various overseas markets in the future and make Taiwan “a global papaya seedling center,” Huang said.

The technology transfer also marked the first time Taiwan’s official institute cooperated with a private company in a country without diplomatic ties, according to officials.

The Kaohsiung station has also authorized other seedlings to be made available overseas, including soybeans, mangoes and dates.

Founded in 1997, Especialistas en Papayas S.A. de C.V. is a papaya trading company that offers guidance and help throughout the cultivation process. Its main trading markets include those in Central and South America, Brazil, Africa and southern Europe.
