Durian lovers came together for a good cause recently as they ate for charity in the 7th Jom Durian event held in The Summit, Subang Jaya.
With more than 2,000 participants, the event raised RM130,000 ($50,507), which would be channelled towards the Children’s Wish Society of Malaysia.
This society is dedicated to helping and fulfilling the wishes of children suffering from either a life-limiting disease or a terminal illness.
To date, the society has fulfilled more than 400 wishes from all over the country in the past six years, with RM2mil in donations collected to help the children below 18 years old.
“We are overwhelmed by the support received from the public.
“However, we are still short of funds required to enable us to effectively reach out to more terminally ill children across Malaysia,” said Children’s Wish Society of Malaysia president Tan Sri Dr Ramon Navaratnam at the event that saw people of all ages and races waiting for their durian feast.
One hour was all that was given to the public to eat as much durian as they could stomach.
Due to the overwhelming response, there were five rounds of the one-hour session.
“We are extremely proud to hold this annual event here in Subang Jaya and I hope this can be a cultural thing in the future,” said Subang Jaya assemblyman Hannah Yeoh.
She said it was a very good programme to support as it benefitted the children as well as the durian lovers.
“When you come to eat, please remember that you are here more for the children and not just the durians,” she added.
