West Java’s Bogor region shipped 1,000 tonnes of mangosteen to China this week in a bid to boost mangosteen exports, according to the Jakarta Post.

In the 2017 season, Bogor produced 2,938 tonnes of the tropical fruit and exported 1,095 tonnes, a number it’s looking to lift.

Mangosteen export centre, Mahkota Manggis Sehati, in Bogor is an operation aimed at providing growers with information on export requirements and motivating them to improve product quality and quantity.

During the export event which was attended by 150 local growers, Bogor Agriculture Agency head, Siti Nurianty, said mangosteen is a potential commodity for export.

Nurianty said that due to strict requirements from importing countries it’s important for growers to maintain good agriculture practices, pest control and post-harvest treatment to help growers remain competitive.

“Gradually, we will register the [mangosteen] farmland that has yet to implement standard operating procedures,” she said.

During the period from November 2018 to February 2019 Jakarta Post reported Indonesia exported 3,409 tonnes of mangosteen.
