According to a report published by the National Agricultural Food Program (Pronagro), Honduras’ rambutan exports will amount to 5 million dollars this year. Julio Morales, the executive director of Pronagro, stressed that the national crop was reinforced by an excellent flowering and that they expect to harvest one million boxes of rambutan.
Most of the production will be sold to the United States, the main market, but the country also sells it to El Salvador and Guatemala. However, the quantity exported to these last destination markets is minimal when compared to the large production that is recorded internally.
Rambutan crops are concentrated from Lake Yojoa, in Cortes, to the Atlantic Coast. It is one of the non-traditional products that in recent years has gained strength because it is friendly to plantations, such as coffee and bananas.
