The low temperatures will affect the 2022-2023 campaign’s mango production. The cold is causing the fruit to detach from the trees affecting more than 30,000 hectares of mango in the San Lorenzo valley.

This year there has been a favorable mass flowering thanks to the weather, which reached 15 degrees, stated Claudio Sarango, a specialist in this crop. However, this doesn’t mean that there will be a good production. After evaluating the fields, producers noticed that the cold affected the mango trees, which will lead to a smaller number of fruits per tree.

It will be difficult for producers to have good production if they didn’t apply the fertilizers, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and minor elements, at the right time. This year there should be better quality mango at a good export price, he added.

The United States is asking for mangoes weighing 400 to 600 grams; Korea is more demanding and requires big mangoes with a red blush on one of their cheeks.

“The mango that is sent by air is paid at two dollars per kilo at the processing plants, but it must have a good blush and weight for the international market,” he stated.
