Khagrachhari gardeners are eyeing a bumper production of mango this season as trees are in full bloom in every orchard in the district.
Mango growers said favourable weather conditions have helped large scale flowering of the trees this season and they are expecting a bumper production of the delicious summer fruit.
Due to bad weather condition, mango production in the district fell drastically in the previous two seasons, growers said.
The growers were worried this year as the mango trees started flowering a bit later than normal.
The agriculture officials, however, differed with their opinion and said the trees flowered at the right time.
Sabinoy Chakma, owner of three mango orchards at Rangapanichhara in Sadar upazila, said there are 750 different varieties of mango trees in his gardens and generally local variety of mango trees flower before Amrapali and Rangui varieties.
“I was a bit worried as mango trees of Ragui variety flowered before the local variety and Amrapali this year,” Sabinoy said, adding that he is happy now as all the trees in his orchards have flowered profusely.
Another gardener Sunu Mong Marma of Upperperachhara in the upazila said not only mangos, many other seasonal fruit trees have also started flowering in his garden.
If the weather remains favourable they will get a bumper yield this year and recover the losses they had to count in the previous two seasons.
Sadar Upazila Agriculture Officer Mohammad Riazur Rahman said the mango trees have flowered at the right time in the district this season.
Due to climate change, Rangui mango trees flowered a bit earlier than the other varieties, Riazur said, adding that the growers need not worry about it.
