With a large population, growing income levels and bullish consumer spending, China has emerged as one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Agriculture, especially the food industry is one that has grown tremendously, not only for products produced locally, but also products that are imported. Fruit is one of the agricultural commodities that has a sustainable, big demand in China. With substantial consumer demand for imported agricultural commodities, local suppliers and those from countries in and out of the region have set their sights towards getting a share of the market for fruit products.

An International Fruit Expo was held at the Import and Export Fair Complex, Guangzhou, China from 27 to 29 June 2019. Local companies and companies from more than 15 countries displayed their fresh and processed fruit products during the duration of the Expo. Besides local Chinese companies which dominated the Expo, the main countries which had a strong presence were from Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia. Other countries represented were Chile, Ecuador, India, Pakistan, Iran, Mexico, Malaysia, Greece, Peru, Uzbekistan and Taiwan.

For tropical fruits, durian was a common feature during the expo, with companies from China, Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand showcasing their fresh and processed products.

A World Fruit Industry Conference with speakers from the host country and some of the participating countries was also held together with the Fruit Expo on 27 June.
