The global production of pineapple in 2005 was 17.6 million mt (Table 1). Brazil Thailand and Philippines are the world's largest producers. These three countries account for 45% of the world production. Other countries with over 1 million mt annual production are Costa Rica, China and India.

The most exporter of fresh pineapple is Costa Rica capturing 41% of the global market in 2005 (Table 2), followed by Belgium (11.6%), Philippines (9.7%), Netherlands (5.3%) and Cote d'Ivoire (5.2%). The last 2 countries are not producers but are redistributors of the fruit.

The biggest importer of fresh pineapple is the USA, taking 29.3% of the total world import (Table 3). This market is expected to be supplied by Costa Rica and Hawaii. The next largest importers from Europe viz. Belgium (13.6%), Japan (7.9%) and Germany (6.2%).

For processed pineapple, the dominant exporter of canned pineapple in 2005 was Thailand which captured 41.5% of the market (Table 4) followed by the Philippines (16.2%) and a fast emerging competitor Indonesia (16.0%). The biggest importer of canned pineapple is USA taking 30.0% of the global export (Table 5) followed by European countries like Germany (10.7%), Russian federation (5.9%) and Netherlands (5.2%).
